World Polio Day

Rotary World Polio Day

Polio is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that mainly affects children.

Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $3.00, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

After 40+ years, Rotary and its partners have reduced polio cases by 99.9 per cent worldwide since their first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

The recent re-emergence of Polio in the US, UK and other countries considered to be Polio free reinforces the fact that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere.

What is the End Polio Now Walk

The END POLIO NOW walk will raise awareness and funds for The Rotary Foundation’s END POLIO NOW campaign.

The mission of the End Polio Now campaign is to increase awareness, advocate, and raise funds to enable us to fulfil the promise that Rotary has made to the world:  “WE WILL ERADICATE POLIO FOREVER”

How to Get Involved

On October 24th, 2022, the City of Vancouver will present the Proclamation of World Polio Day to representatives from the seven Vancouver Area Rotary Clubs.  This will be followed by an END POLIO NOW walk at 5:00 pm from Vancouver City Hall to Science World (2.7km). The lights at City Hall and Science World will glow red at sunset to acknowledge World Polio Day.
